Flag of GaliciaGalicia - Inland Excursions

A trip to Galicia without stopping at Santiago de Compostela would be an unforgivable error. Santiago is one of those cities whose powerful charm and attraction, grows stronger with each visit and so the traveller gets the feeling that he has never quite discovered everything that Santiago has to offer. Naturally, it would be impossible for us to list all of the elements to be included in its overwhelming artistic catalogue. We cannot even try to reflect the historic importance of an old village, practically at the very end of the known world, which managed to become one of the capitals of Christianity. The traveller will have to forgive us if we leave him to his own devices in Santiago. He will have no trouble at all in finding very complete guidebooks which will direct his stops to the Cathedral, the Plaza del Obradoiro and the labyrinth of porticoes streets which offer the most unexpected and pleasing perspective at each corner.

As for the rest of the area, we will stay close to the coast and we propose some excursions which will scarcely take the traveller away from his coastal itinerary. From Pontedeume, he should follow the course of the river until the Monastery of Caaveiro, a beautiful and suggestive set of medieval ruins, surrounded by a thick forest. In order to reach the nearby Monastery of Monfero, with its fine Baroque church, we suggest that Betanzos be chosen as the starting point. Here as well, the combination of architectures and vegetation's provides us as a result with an ideal setting for any romantic, historical tale. The Monastery of Sobrado de los Monjes, one of the major monuments of rural Galicia, should also be approached from Betanzos for the road crosses lovely scenery.

The Monastery of Armenteira can be the destination for a short excursion from Cambados. And from Vigo, the Castle of Sobroso will give us a fine opportunity for reconstructing the hazardous period of the Middle Ages, which left Galicia with a string of fortresses, convents, churches, Cruceiros (crosses) and cities, which have fortunately, survived until today.
