Flag of GaliciaGalicia - Popular Culture

There are two perfect opportunities for coming into contact with this popular culture of great wealth and vitality: the Fairs, the open-air markets which are held periodically in each town, and the romerias or pilgrimages. In the markets, one can find a good sampling of the local craft work, with wood products and pottery at the head. The pilgrimages give life and form to the old legends give life and form to the old legends and rites, and furnish the traveller with the chance of seeing the traditional and authentic dances and music reformed. We can in no way offer a complete list, but we would like to call the traveller's attention to several exceptional items: the hats from Noya (a delicate achievement by the local basket weavers), the lace from Camariñas, the ceramic from Bonxe or Buño, and the wooden shoes which are generally found in any fair.

Outside of the popular scope but still the product of skilled craftsmanship are the Sagradelos ceramic work, which is constantly undergoing changes, as a result of the investigations carried out on the roots and origins of such work. And going back to that popular cultural manifestation, the pilgrimages, we wish to mention the amulets which are made by the alms collectors of San Andres de Teixido from bread dough. They dye the dough with bright colours and here we have a very humble example of one of Galicia's oldest customs.

We cannot conclude without making some reference to the horreos or ganaries. The traveller has had endless opportunities for getting to know a little about their structure throughout his journey and so we will only say now that this unusual structure has led scholars to believe in a possible Celtic root and an almost sure religious origin for the care which goes into their construction and the fact that they are set in an isolated and eminent position, do not correspond to a simple granary.
